AI adoption is rising. ROI is not. AML resolution is a practical place to prove value

Enterprise AI adoption is no longer the challenge. Proving enterprise value is.

McKinsey's 2026 State of AI survey finds that 44 percent of organizations are now scaling AI across the enterprise, up from 38 percent a year ago. Among organizations with at least $1 billion in annual revenue, 40 percent of respondents report scaling AI agents in one or more functions, up from 27 percent last year.

The financial results have not moved at the same speed. Only 37 percent of respondents attribute any positive EBIT impact to AI, essentially unchanged from 2025, and only 6 percent qualify as AI high performers. At the same time, 80 percent say AI has improved their individual productivity and 50 percent say it helps them make better decisions.

The gap is clear: AI is helping people, and enterprises are deploying more of it, but broad financial impact is still difficult to prove.

The ROI gap is a workflow problem

McKinsey's high performers point to a practical answer. Nearly three-quarters report fundamentally redesigning workflows because of AI, compared with only one-quarter of other respondents. They are also twice as likely to have defined processes for quantifying the impact of AI initiatives.

That distinction matters. Adding an AI tool to an unchanged process may produce faster summaries or better drafts without changing the economics of the operation. Material financial returns are more likely when AI is applied to a complete workflow with a measurable baseline, clear decision paths, defined controls and an operating model that can absorb the change.

AML alert resolution is an unusually strong place to begin.

AML resolution already has measurable economics

Financial institutions already know, or can establish, the core economics of their alert workload: alert volume, analyst handling time, queue aging, escalation and rework rates, evidence completeness, management and quality-control effort, and cost per resolved alert.

That makes AML resolution different from broad horizontal AI programs whose return must be inferred from adoption or employee sentiment. The operating baseline already exists. The work is repetitive enough to measure, consequential enough to matter, and bounded enough to govern.

AML Resolve works as a resolution layer within the institution's existing screening and case environment. It gathers approved context, assembles evidence, prepares consistent rationales, and routes alerts to one of three governed paths: eligible for customer-approved auto-clear treatment, analyst-ready, or escalated for higher-risk or ambiguous review.

The value can therefore be measured in operational and financial terms, not merely demonstrated.

Measure the opportunity before the pilot

The pilot should end with a business decision

Too many AI pilots end with a conclusion that the technology is promising. That is not enough.

A successful AML Resolve pilot should produce a business case that management, compliance, operations, technology and finance can evaluate together. It should show the validated capacity benefit, the annualized financial opportunity, the expected payback, the controls required for production, and the next alert classes or workflows that can be added over time.

This approach reduces two forms of risk at once. It limits implementation risk because the institution starts with a bounded workflow and no rip-and-replace requirement. It limits financial risk because the opportunity is measured before the pilot and validated before a broader deployment.

When the alert population and operating model support it, even modest reductions in manual handling can compound across a large recurring workload and create a material financial benefit. The institution does not have to take that assertion on faith. It can measure it.
